Bob Boehner – Deputy Treasurer

I began drum lessons before the age of 10 with Walt Mitzel at Menchey’s on Saturday mornings. My dad started the Cannoneers Junior Drum and Bugle Corps in the mid 1960’s. My first year I carried a rifle in the honor guard, since I was too small to carry a drum. My second year I played third soprano, and my last two years I played French Horn. Many Cannoneers moved on to the Lancers, whom we admired greatly. I came to a Lancers rehearsal in 1994 or 1995 for a Sunday afternoon date with my girlfriend (now wife) and was handed a mellophone. I played that for about ten years and then moved to the drum line. I played straight bass, then rudimental bass until a sabbatical for a few years and now have been playing straight bass again. I have hip issues, so I may return to parades in the honor guard, but will continue in the drum line for concerts. I am a third-generation accountant nearing retirement, and I serve on 5 non-profit boards. We were taught by ear in the 60’s, so my good friend and fellow mellophone Andy Crouse would number my Lancers music for me. My scariest gig – when we marched in the Taneytown parade and I was the only mellophone (out of 9) and we played Star Wars. Fortunately, my old Cannoneer mate, Mike Carver, played the mellophone solo on his soprano in that parade!
